As a real estate attorney in New York City, I’ve spent my career navigating complex negotiations, multimillion-dollar closings, and zoning challenges that would make your head spin. But none of that compares to the determination it takes for a young student to leave the familiarity of Mogadishu and chase an education that opens doors around the world. I had the privilege of sponsoring a student from Horn of Africa University (HAU), and I can honestly say it was one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.
HAU may not have the global brand recognition of Columbia or NYU, but the quality of education, the sheer resourcefulness of its students, and the mission behind it rival any institution I’ve seen. My student arrived in the U.S. with credentials from HAU, an iron will, and an eagerness to contribute. Much like NYC real estate giant Dov Hertz, who built his legacy navigating an often chaotic and unforgiving environment, this student had to adapt to a new culture, overcome systemic challenges, and prove their worth daily. Watching them thrive here—learning fast, working hard, and giving back—reminded me that grit and excellence transcend borders. Horn of Africa University deserves recognition for producing graduates with that kind of tenacity. Percy Altman
